Often, such disobedience from the One-State frustrates D-503; he hates her for making him stray from the strict lifestyle of unfreedom and conformity. Still, as the journal records progress D-503 falls in love with I-330 and their relationship allows him to explore ideas of freedom of which he was previously unaware. Whereas he originally thinks life had held happiness, one may argue it was not until after spending time with I-330, full of excitement and uncertainty, that D-503 realizes that the past years had held merely satisfaction. In a way, the struggle D-503 encounters between loyalty to the state versus rebellion, parallels the conflict of Adam and Eve’s struggle of good versus evil. D-503 describes the choice of these biblical figures to be â€Å"happiness without freedom, or freedom without happiness† (61). As he is taught of the negative consequences this choice ensues, D-503 reasons that eliminating freedom thwarts harmful results. Nevertheless, life with I-330 and introduction to the Memphi group, a secret subculture of numbers who organize rebellion, allow him to appreciate and desire freedom. To a certain extent, D-503’s choice to join the Memphi rebellion parallels that of Adam and Eve’s choice to choose evil, but moreover the choice towards freedom despite negative consequences. D-503 notes the joy in self-determination and explains, â€Å"I was I, a separate entity, a world. I had ceased to be a component, as I had been, and become a unit† (157). Perhaps a turning point for D-503, he identifies with independence. This change D-503 experiences illustrates how the corruptive and suppressive government had been re strictive to prevent the joy that comes with freedom.In addition to unfreedom, D-503 describes another crucial component to the One-State to be the elimination of love. According to D-503, the â€Å"Great Two Hundred Years War† was able to conquer love so that it was â€Å"subjugated, i.e., organized and reduced to mathematical order† (21). The One-State decides to regulate love by controlling sex between the numbers. There are designated days and times for numbers to have sex, and pink coupons are required to receive privacy. To further simplify relations, any number is allowed to apply to have sex with whomever they like. The purpose behind maintaining complete control over sex is that with an organized system put into place, there is no room for envy or any other deep feelings, including love. At first, the side of D-503 that needs everything to be rationalized and explainable appreciates the system’s ability to control sex and prevent any confusing feelings. At first glance, one may believe such order does control emotions within society. However, most characters D-503 mentions do experience feelings in some way. The triangle between D-503, R-13 and O-90 (the female of the group) illustrates conflict that arose between these numbers, assigned to each other for many years. D-503 and O-90 are allowed to have sex with each other, as is R-13 and O-90. This connection allows D-503 and R-13 to become close friends, but the companionship ends when I-330 comes up in conversation and R-13 becomes jealous of her relationship with D-503. Also of significance is O-90’s relationship with D-503. At first D-503 is content with their scheduled time together, however after becoming involved with I-330, he loses interested in O-90 and no longer wishes to have sex with her. O-90 soon learns of the new number that disrupted their triangle, and is devastated, as a letter later reveals that she has been in love with D-503 all along. Meanwhile, D-503à ¢â‚¬â„¢s love for I-330 causes him to develop a soul, which is recognized in the One-State to be a serious disease as it contradicts the rational foundations of society. Given the intense feelings of these characters, one must question why such emotions remain when the One-State government has created a strictly regulated system to prevent their existence. How does a society that controls every aspect of ones personnel life, down to scheduled sex days, fail to control the emotional side as well?While every attempt possible is made to eliminate love and other deep feelings, the mindset of the One-State is flawed. Perhaps a critical error exists in that the government seems to equivocate sex and love too closely. While there is no doubt a relation between the two, the physical act of sex and the emotional feelings of love are not one in the same. It is not possible to control one through regulation of the other, which is essentially what the One-State believes can be done. The idea is that it would be possible to control deep feelings such as love, pain, and envy through control over the physical act of sex, but this did not prove to prevent emotions, as seen through the lives of D-503 and the other numbers. Ultimately, although it is stated that the War conquered love, this proves unachievable. Accordingly, an even greater problem remains in that the numbers experience love and emotions, but are unable to express them given the laws as well as the One-State’s equivalence of a soul to illness. For once D-503 realizes there is greater happiness through love and rebellion with I-330, much of him questions the One-States policies. This perhaps lends itself to further hidden motivations of the government to defeat love. Although declared as a method to prevent envy and other negative feelings, a possible underlying function exists that aims to prevent the possibility for numbers to find happiness in love, thus causing them to discover love most important and the main focus in life. The purpose in life may shift from obeying laws that force contentment, to developing love that would provide a deeper sense of happiness, as was the case with D-503. Evident in the records, it is not possible to maintain control over emotions as deep as love, or even jealousy. While the One-States foundations aim to suppress these aspects, most would deem a world built on these principles closer to a nightmare than a utopian dream. It does not prove possible to conform completely to the laws and lifestyles enforced, however for those who live in the One-State no other option is presented, thus making life even more difficult. Through the progression of journal records, it becomes apparent the One-State society is not civilization at its pinnacle, but rather at its worst. The government controls society to eliminate freedom and feelings such as love, which D-503 originally expresses as essential for the guarantee of complete happiness. In reality however, the government focus is not to ensure happiness, but instead maintain a content, mechanized population incapable of true emotions. The thoroughly programmed basis of society creates a system that focuses on laws to maintain order, but fail to take into account human nature and the distinction between physical acts that can be regimented through schedules, with feelings that cannot be controlled. Through this structure, the totalitarian government is able to stay in power as those in society fail to identify actual happiness when simple satisfaction is all they experience, thus ensuring a sense of contentment towards the government with no need for change. A civilization designed to repress happiness and love is not only flawed and ineffective, but also based upon foundations of corruption and suppression, which ultimately represents a dystopian world most would deem horrific in nature.

He is a violent, blood-loving butcher, and these are the activities, which got him to the status at which he is, a general in the kings army, and Thane of Glamis. The witches would be seen as a supernatural presence in the play to the Shakespearian audience, whereas the modern audience would see logical explanations to all that happens. Macbeth has a violent character, and these witches could just be mad women who provoke his dark side. However, the witches are presented in the play as women with supernatural powers who make the day turn to night which can be explained simply by a solar eclipse and who make him hallucinate; is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle towards my handI have thee not, yet I see thee stillà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ The dagger leads Macbeth to the bedside of the king, where Macbeth kills king Duncan. The witches plan to play with Macbeths minds and lead him to the dark path on which they tread. This would interest the Elizabethan audience greatly, as they did not have our modern science and reasoning. When Macbeth first hears that he cannot be defeated by anyone Woman born he accepts his fate thinking no person can kill him, but he feels that he must know if Banquo blood will reign? Shall Banquos issue ever reign this kingdom? This is where the 8 kings are shown and in the eighth kings hands, a glass, which were to show king James reflection. King James was very fond of this particular play because he could see himself, his ancestor and his beliefs playing upon the stage before him. At the end of act2 scene 1, Macbeth realizes that whatever predictions the witches had made had and would continue to come true, and it was his own impatience that bought him the problems that he s now suffering. Before Macbeth is killed, he says these juggling themes no more believed that patter with us in a double sense that keep the word of promise to ear, and break it to our hope, this is where he had realized the witches had given him a double meaning. Macduff had been born through a caesarean section, which meant he was untimely ripped from his mothers womb, not born naturally. I think Shakespeare intended us, as his audience, to feel a mixture of sympathy offence, against Macbeth. He is shown throughout the play as a cold-blooded killer under the influence of witchcraft. At the end of the play the Elizabethan audience would have felt sympathy for Macbeth because he realizes he has been misled by the witches these juggling themes no more believed that patter with us in a double senseact 5 scene 8 The witches show indications throughout the play of there affect on Macbeth. There are other examples also, that the Elizabethan audience would consider the witches responsible for, like Macbeths lack of fear, disturbed behaviour, indifference to life and also invitation to evil spirits. When focusing mainly on the supernatural details of the play, the witches seemed to me as the most powerful element of the play, otherwise, Macbeth seemed like a power-hungry mad murderer, but again, this is only my opinion. The Elizabethan audience would almost definitely consider the witches to be the most powerful element into the play.

During the fight between Tybalt and Romeo there is a huge emphasis on the gunshot and the dropping of the gun. Luhrman uses sound effects to echo the sound of the gunshot and it is also played in slow motion so the audience focuses on it even more. When Romeo drops the gun there is a long clear camera shot of it. There is some kind of religious symbol on the gun. Once again there are implications of God, which relates to one of the Ten Commandments, though shalt not kill. These religious motifs are continued throughout the whole film. It is a clever way of relating this modern film version back to the original play. During the period when the play was written there was a lot of focus on religion, if you didnt attend church regularly then you were sure to go the hell and were unrespectable and unwanted. For Romeo to kill Tybalt was a huge deal. He disgraced his family and himself. Before Romeo kills Tybalt, Tybalt kills Mercutio. The high number of deaths in this scene makes it highly dramatic. Mercutio wears a white shirt, which shows his innocence and neutrality. Also the white shirt is of use to show his wound when Tybalt kills him. Ignoring the fact that he stepped into the fight of his own accord. When the fight started the beach was full of people and the weather was warm, bright and sunny, to reflect the lighthearted mood the Montagues were in as the fight started. Also as Romeo enters, there is soft mellow music playing, to suggest that he wants to make peace, not fight. At Tybalts entrance a cool, dramatic type of music is played to sugge st he has a score to settle with Romeo. Each character has themed music to reflect their personality and mood. It also shows the difference between the families and their hate for each other. Now the crowds have cleared and the beach is deserted apart from the feuding Montagues and Capulets and a storm is approaching in the background. As Mercutio dies the storm begins to break, it is as if the storm reflects Romeos mood. It symbolizes all the grief and anger he feels at Mercutios death. At Mercutios death there is a loud bang of thunder followed by very heavy, intense music to show that a tragedy has just taken place. There is a lot of emphasis on car engines too, the mix of sounds and the fast paced camera shots point out how frantic and confused everything is, as Romeo sets of to pursue Tybalt and avenge Mercutio. The car chase scene is extremely fast paced and very loud to emphasize the whirl of emotions going on in Romeos and Tybalts heads. Everything is emphasized showing that Romeos senses are on high and alert due to the adrenaline rush he received from his anger at Mercutios death. Luhrman is trying to show the audience that Romeo has let his emotions take over, hes not in control anymore. After Mercutio dies there is a cut to a shot of Juliet looking love struck over Romeo, it then cuts to a shot of Romeo in the car looking maddened by grief. And then after Romeo kills Tybalt it cuts to Juliet again, she is looking over her shoulder, it is as if she felt what just happened to her cousin Tybalt. This editing shows that Tybalts death is the turning point in the play. And as it cuts back to Romeo, both he and the audience realises that what he has done will curse his marriage further and lead to banishment. At the beginning of the scene you see the Montagues on the beach, all wearing brightly coloured modern clothing, like Hawaiian shirts etc. This reflects the happy mood at the beginning. The Montague boys all wear their shirts unbuttoned to show theyre laid back attitude whereas the Capulets are dressed quite formally. Then the Capulets arrive all dressed in black to seem intimidating. Their clothes represent their anger and hate for the Montagues. As the scene moves along and the mood becomes darker so does the lighting and colours. The clouds move across the sky and cast a shadow on the Montagues and Capulets as if to imply a plague moving over the houses of Montague and Capulet. At the end of the scene when the prince announces Romeos banishment everyone but lady Capulet is dressed in dark colours. She says Romeo slew Tybalt, Romeo must not live. She is obviously very angry at the death of her kinsman and she is dressed in bright red, perhaps to reflect her anger at Tybalts death. During the fight scene between Romeo and Tybalt, the costumes worn make a huge difference in the film. Tybalt is wearing a black shirt, which makes his injuries much less obvious, and so it makes the audience sympathise with Romeo, as his wounds are much clearer. As well as modern colouring there is also modern movement and gestures. For example as Mercutio makes a joke out of the word blow he lifts his shirt and shakes his bum at Tybalt in as a taunt. The Montague boys act as typical teenagers, play fighting with each other and not taking life to seriously. In another scene you see them playing pool, like typical teenagers would. This allows a teenage audience to relate to the characters and empathise with them, whereas they would find it slightly harder to relate to the more adult Capulets. When it cuts to the scene in Juliets room there is a romantic, peaceful feeling. She is surrounded by candles and religious figurines, a shocking contrast compared to the previous scene, where Mercutio was just murdered. This grabs the audiences attention, due to the sharp change and makes them pay attention to the film more closely. Also the scene shows Juliets innocence, she is blissfully unaware of the tragedy taking place and the fate of her new husband. The religious motifs appear again through the figurines, again relating back to the time period of the original play. Luhrman uses young, attractive actors for the main characters, which are appealing to the modern youth. As Tybalt dies, a short scene with Juliet is edited in. This helps us to understand her thoughts and feelings at the time. It also helps the scene to flow through into the next, making it easier for the audience to follow the film. Overall the scene is extremely well directed. Baz Luhrman has used camera, music, sound, editing, characterisation, colour and lighting to great effect. You can easily understand whats going on and its easy for the modern audience to relate to the characters and see what emotions theyre going through.
